Background of the study
This study investigates how cultural context influences the translation of traditional narratives into Nigerian Pidgin. Traditional narratives are rich in cultural symbolism, idiomatic expressions, and historical references, which can be challenging to translate into a language as dynamic and informal as Nigerian Pidgin (Okoro, 2023). Translators must navigate the delicate balance between preserving the original cultural essence and adapting the content to the vernacular nuances of Nigerian Pidgin. The study employs a qualitative approach, analyzing translated narratives and conducting interviews with translators and cultural experts. It explores how cultural context affects lexical choices, tone, and the conveyance of metaphorical language. By focusing on a selection of traditional narratives, the research evaluates the translation strategies that either enhance or diminish the cultural integrity of the source material. The study further examines how audience reception varies with different translation approaches, highlighting the importance of culturally informed translation practices in maintaining the authenticity of traditional narratives (Okoro, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Cultural context poses significant challenges in translating traditional narratives into Nigerian Pidgin, often leading to a loss of cultural nuance and symbolic meaning. Misinterpretations and oversimplifications have been observed, which can dilute the richness of the original narratives (Okoro, 2023). The absence of standardized cultural guidelines for translation results in inconsistent outcomes, making it difficult for translators to maintain fidelity to the source material. This study aims to identify the key cultural factors that impact translation quality and to assess how these factors influence the audience’s understanding of traditional narratives, ultimately proposing strategies to enhance cultural authenticity in translation.

Objectives of the study:

To examine the influence of cultural context on Nigerian Pidgin translations of traditional narratives.

To identify common challenges in maintaining cultural integrity during translation.

To recommend strategies for culturally informed translation practices.

Research questions:

How does cultural context affect Nigerian Pidgin translation of traditional narratives?

What challenges do translators face in preserving cultural nuances?

What measures can improve cultural fidelity in translations?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the critical role of cultural context in translating traditional narratives into Nigerian Pidgin. The findings will guide translators and cultural practitioners in developing strategies that preserve cultural authenticity, ensuring that the richness of traditional narratives is maintained for future generations (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of cultural context on the translation of traditional narratives into Nigerian Pidgin, focusing on selected texts and translator interviews.

Definitions of terms:

Cultural context: The set of cultural conditions and influences that affect language use.

Traditional narratives: Oral or written stories that reflect cultural heritage.

Translation fidelity: The degree to which a translation preserves the meaning and cultural nuances of the source text.
